In Beaufort County, it is the responsibility of the Tax Collector, under the supervision of the Treasurer, to investigate and pursue the collection of delinquent property taxes, penalties, and fees. Collections are pursued through various delinquent collections programs that begin with notifying taxpayers of the delinquent taxes owed.

Motor Vehicles

Motor vehicle taxes are considered delinquent if not paid on or before the date shown on your motor vehicle property tax bill. Any penalties or fees associated with a late motor vehicle tax payment are determined and collected by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), not by the Beaufort County Treasurer’s Office. Once paid, SCDMV will send you a bill for any late fees or you can visit a local field office to obtain a bill and pay.

Real and Personal Property

Real and personal property taxes are considered delinquent if not paid on or before January 15th of the year following the taxable year. Penalties are applied in accordance with South Carolina State Statute 12-45-180 and late fees are applied in accordance with South Carolina State Statutes. Penalties and fees may only be waived if there has been an error on the County’s part.
