2020 Installment Program Expansion

Beaufort County Treasurer's Office - Thursday, May 14, 2020

In an effort to provide flexibility to Beaufort County's taxpayers who have been affected by COVID-19, the Beaufort County Treasurer's Office has extended the Installment Payment Program for mobile homes, residential and commercial real property to all taxpayers. The Installment Payment Program is a pay-in-advance program that allows customers to pay the upcoming year's taxes ahead of the annual tax bills being issued.

These newly relaxed requirements will provide taxpayers with the freedom to pay their 2020 property tax payments in advance, in the amount they are most comfortable with and as frequently as they would like. Taxpayers already participating in the program are automatically eligible.

Effective immediately:

  • Taxpayers wishing to join the program may do so by completing the Installment Program application.
  • Pre-payments may be made at any time and in any amount up until October 15, 2020.

"We want to be there for our customers and the way we can do that is providing a way that they can pre-pay their future tax bill in a manner that they are most comfortable with." said Beaufort County Treasurer, Maria Walls.

Required by South Carolina State law, the Treasurer's Office will provide an installment bill every other month equal to 1/6th of the prior year tax amount, however customers can choose what works best for them.

If choosing to pre-pay the amount on the bill, the taxpayer may utilize any payment method most convenient for them. If a taxpayer would like to pre-pay an alternative amount or would like to pre-pay more frequently, the taxpayer must mail their pre-payment to:

Special permission was granted to the Treasurer's Office by the South Carolina Department of Revenue and with the assistance and support of Beaufort County Council Chairman Joe Passiment.

"Thanks to the Department of Revenue and Chairman Passiment's assistance, we have been able to get our program approved. However, our system was built to comply with State law so to make this work, we are asking customers to use our pay-by-mail option, which has been prepped to accept alternate amounts and payment frequency," Treasurer Walls explained. "We are all in this together. My team and I are trying to do everything we can to make this difficult time easier for our community."

Some existing program criteria will remain. Only real property and mobile homes with no prior year delinquent balances, are eligible for the Installment Program. Watercraft, vehicles, and other personal property are not eligible.

Customers wishing to opt-out of the program may do so in writing by contacting the Treasurer's Office prior to October 15, 2020. After that date, any pre-paid funds will be applied to the 2020 annual property tax bill.
