Legal Residence Exemption

If you want to pay more in taxes, don’t keep reading…

But if you’re like most of us, you want to take advantage of every tax discount possible. The largest discount opportunity is the Legal Residence Exemption. Whether you are new to Beaufort County or have received this exemption in the past, it is not given automatically and must be applied for with the Beaufort County Assessor’s Office.

We don’t want our customers paying more than they have to. Getting an application in as quickly as possible ensures their tax bill is accurate and avoids overpaying thousands of dollars.
— MARIA WALLS, CPA - BEAUFORT COUNTY TREASURER

If you are not receiving the exemption, now is the time to apply.

If you received the exemption last year, you will need to reapply if…

  • You’ve had any changes to your property title,

  • Moved to a new home,

  • Had any changes to your mailing address.

Customers who have bought a home in the last two years should be aware that even though they may have been receiving the exemption, they could be benefiting from the previous owner’s exemption. Please ensure that you have applied.

Mortgage companies will begin requesting balances in the near future and the bills will be mailed the end of October. The sooner a customer’s application is submitted to the Assessor’s Office, the more likely your exemption will get on your tax bill in time.
