The delinquent tax sale is an open auction held on the first Monday in October and is the forced collection of real property taxes in accordance with South Carolina State Statute 12-51-50.

Prior to the tax sale, there are multiple attempts to notify the taxpayer of the delinquent taxes. Taxpayers wishing to prevent their property from being auctioned must submit payment in guaranteed funds and be received by the Treasurer’s Office no later than 5:00 p.m., the Friday before the tax sale is held.

Registration to bid on property being auctioned opens one month before the tax sale is to be held. Individuals wishing to bid on property must register in advance, online or in-person. Registration will not be permitted the day of the tax sale. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to research every property on which they intend to bid. To assist with a bidder’s research, the Treasurer’s Office provides several online resources.

A tax sale and a foreclosure sale are two separate auctions and performed for different purposes. The Treasurer’s Office does not handle foreclosures. If you need information about foreclosure sales you can visit the Master in Equity’s website.
